Our subject this time is the artist Tirzah Garwood.

This chapter of the SWSC is timed to coincide with Towner's centenary celebrations and the 'Following Ravilious' public art trail in Newhaven this summer.

Join us for a vegetarian supper followed by an illustrated talk about this talented artist.

7.30 - talk only ticket holders arrive. Bar and refreshments.

8.00 - talk commences in the hall.

8.45 - Q&A with Sara Cooper.

9.30 - close.

We are delighted to be joined by our speaker for the evening, Sara Cooper. Sara is Head of Collections and Exhibitions at Towner Eastbourne where she is responsible for the exhibition programme and for the permanent collection, including a wide range of works in various media by Tirzah Garwood. She has curated numerous exhibitions including Eileen Mayo: A Natural History (2022), John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace (2021) and Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship (2017) in collaboration with Andy Friend.

Eileen 'Tirzah' Garwood was born in Eastbourne on the 11th April 1908. She attended Eastbourne School of Art (1925–28), and first exhibited in 1927 at the Redfern Gallery, where one of her early woodcuts received significant praise in The Times.

In 1930 she married the artist Eric Ravilious, and her skill and originality in wood engraving and print making had a significant influence on his work. Although she is best known for her intricate engravings and exquisite marbling, Garwood was also an accomplished painter.

She died in Colchester on the 27th March 1951. A memorial exhibition was held at Towner in 1952 and her autobiography was published posthumously in 2012.

Proceeds from the evening will help to support the work of Hospitable Environment CIC, a socially engaged community arts organisation based in Newhaven, East Sussex. We explore what it takes to create safe, happy and sustainable communities by gathering people together around shared food and creative experiences.

We have introduced some 'helping hands' tickets that invite you to join us without charge in exchange for some help on the evening. If you sign up for one of these tickets, we will contact you to discuss how you might be able to assist on the evening. This might be greeting guests, helping to serve food and drink, washing up, or helping us to set up and pack away. We like to create a sense of occasion, and many hands make light work!

We look forward to seeing you in October.
